Lyon’s Stylish Eyewear Boutique: LouLou – Curated Independent Brands and an Adorable Mascot!

In French, “Lou” is a common diminutive for names such as Louise, Louis, or Louisa, while the doubled “Lou Lou” carries an endearing connotation derived from “loup” (wolf), often used as a tender nickname akin to “darling” or “sweetie” in English. In the heart of Lyon, France, there is a stylish boutique eyewear store aptly named LouLou—a name that feels authentically French while evoking a sense of endearing intimacy. The shop has earned international recognition, having recently been named one of the top five eyewear stores by a leading foreign eyewear media.

Spanning two floors, LouLou offers a thoughtfully curated experience: the ground level features a dedicated display of eyewear, while the upper floor serves as an exclusive area for eye examinations, customer relaxation, and even a small bar. The striking arched ceiling immediately draws the eye, evoking the refined atmosphere of a contemporary art gallery. The overall aesthetic masterfully blends classic and modern elements—metallic accents, raw concrete walls, dark wood, and soft pink concrete flooring—creating an elegant harmony of materials. Adding a playful yet sophisticated touch are tubular-framed chairs and sofas from the innovative French furniture brand Moustache.

Unlike conventional optical stores that fill every surface with frames, LouLou adopts a minimalist approach. The ground floor features just one dedicated eyewall showcasing approximately 80 carefully selected pieces—a deliberate curation that reflects the owner’s discerning eye.

Founder and optician Michael Lalande, with over 20 years of experience in optometry, opened the first LouLou location in Lyon in 2017. His idea was to offer designer glasses from around the world in a refined atmosphere, with a service similar to that of a luxury concierge. Late last year, the boutique relocated to its current, more spacious and more central location in the city, marking an exciting new chapter.

“I like to highlight stories and designers. And I make it a point of honour to seek out new designers,” Michael explains. “For example, I was the first in France to offer Lapima, after discovering it in New York. Recently, I was charmed by the artistic work of the Paloceras brand. I am committed to offering glasses that are carefully designed, made with quality materials and that respect a quality creation process.” At LouLou, visitors can explore rare and lesser-seen labels, including the newly stocked Cubitts—one of the few in France to offer it. The boutique also carries other independent favorites such as Max Pittion, BAARS, Pontet, Gobi Amsterdam, Kuboraum, and Mykita, making it a true treasure trove for locals and visitors seeking standout, characterful frames.

Music plays an integral role in the shopping experience at LouLou. “We love music, and the musical atmosphere is part of the shopping experience. Just like the shop’s scent, which is custom-designed,” Michael notes. The store features curated playlists from French radio stations like Radio Meuh, which elegantly combines soul, funk, disco, and electronic music. Each year, LouLou hosts two to three in-store events, inviting local DJs—some of them are even LouLou’s customers.

Adding an extra layer of charm is the boutique’s real mascot: Diego, an irresistibly cute dachshund who graces the shop with his presence two days a week!

LouLou stands as a refined destination for eyewear enthusiasts in Lyon, combining exceptional curation, architectural elegance, and genuine warmth—complete with a four-legged ambassador who steals the show.
