During the second day of the Milan Optical Fair (MIDO) on February 1, the MIDO Awards ceremony took place, featuring the Best Store Design award among others. We eagerly anticipate the announcement of the award winners each year and can’t wait to share this news with you. As a jury member, we absolutely believe this year’s winner is well-deserved—André Opticas (Chiado) from Portugal. This boutique eyewear shop is located in Chiado, a significant cultural district in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.
André Opticas (Chiado) occupies the ground floor and basement of a historic building, which has been completely renovated into a luxurious, detail-rich two-level space reminiscent of an opulent railway carriage. The store features walls adorned with showcases filled with eyewear, a generous use of precious wood, and seating made of wood, fabric, and marble. The playful wallpaper, custom mosaic flooring (with the entire basement and stairs covered in plush carpet), brass accents, and warm tones and lighting create an atmosphere akin to a vintage luxury carriage, unique and elegant.
At the end of the store, a thoughtfully designed room serves as the space where the manager conducts frame repairs. Additionally, a whole wall of wooden cabinets next to the stairs displays rare antique eye-testing tools, bestowing the space with distinct spiritual significance. The warm visual style and exquisite materials flow seamlessly between the ground and basement levels. The eye-examination area is situated at the end of the basement.
According to the André Opticas website, this store offers a wide range of high-end brands and traditional craft brands, showcasing eyewear from numerous influential designers over the past 200 years. It has become a trusted destination for local residents as well as visitors from outside the area.
