Decoding the “Marty Supreme” Timothée Chalamet Look: The Retro Glasses Taking the Internet by Storm!

Starring Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme: Genius of Eccentricity takes its inspiration from legendary American ping pong player Marty Reisman, chronicling the wild and absurd dream-chasing journey of Marty Mauser, a young man in 1950s New York, whose obsession is to become the world champion of table tennis. The film has generated a great deal of buzz—especially the exquisitely vintage, sophisticated, and intellectual glasses worn by Timothée, which have become a hot topic among fashion lovers and fans alike.

A New Kind of Rimless Glasses, Dating Back to the 1930s
The glasses Timothée wears in the film are the “Numont” style, which was extremely popular from the late 1930s to the 1950s. They were developed and launched between 1938 and 1940 by American Optical (AO), a pioneering U.S. eyewear manufacturer, in response to the fragility of older rimless designs. The name “Numont” comes from a combination of “Nu” (short for “new”) and “Mount” (as in mounting or frame), signifying a brand-new lens-mounting method.

The most distinctive feature of Numont is a slim, curved metal bar hidden behind the top of the lenses. This bar stretches from the bridge of the nose to the temples, never touching the lenses themselves. The lenses are held in place solely by two screws at the nose bridge, making them appear to float on the wearer’s face. Compared to conventional fully rimless glasses that lack a supporting frame, the cross-back metal bar in Numont designs acts as a “spine,” enhancing the stability between the lenses and the temples.

Numont glasses exude a professional, intellectual, and refined aura—perfectly aligned with the film’s 1950s setting. To complement Timothée’s face shape and the movie’s aesthetic, a lens shape was chosen with rounded corners and a touch of geometric flair.

Paying Tribute to the Original
In real life, the actual Marty Reisman in the 1950s favored this slender and elegant Numont design, pairing it with a scholarly look that projected a professional and capable image on the table tennis court.
